Sean's father was an engineer for DuPont. His mother, Cheryl, was a financial analyst also for DuPont.
Originally went to the University of Virginia to study to be a lawyer. A chance audition for a part in "A Raisin In the Sun" changed his direction. He ultimately got his master's degree in drama from New York University in 1996.
Graduated from Brandywine High School, Wilmington, Delaware.
Both of his parents are from Guyana.

Sean Patrick Thomas (born December 17, 1970) is an American actor.
Thomas was born in Wilmington, Delaware to Carlton Thomas (an engineer for DuPont) and Cheryl (a financial analyst who also worked for DuPont), both of whom immigrated from Guyana. Thomas, who has two younger siblings, graduated from Brandywine High School in Delaware and attended the University of Virginia. He originally intended to study Law, but upon unsuccessfully auditoning for a role in the film A Raisin in the Sun, Thomas changed directions and decided to get his Masters in Drama from New York University.
Thomas is best known for his lead role, along side Julia Stiles, in the high-grossing 2001 film Save the Last Dance. Subsequently, he appeared in supporting roles in the films Barbershop and Halloween: Resurrection, both of which were released in 2002.
Thomas was a cast member on The District, a television crime drama that aired on CBS from 2000 to 2004.
