Peter Strauss Detailed Biography -

Peter Strauss is well known for his long list of starring roles in motion pictures for television including The Jericho Mile, for which he won an Emmy Award. He also received Emmy Award nominations for his roles in the mini-series Rich Man, Poor Man and Masada. Strauss was born in New York City and grew up in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. He attended the Hackley School for Boys in Tarrytown, New York, and in 1969 graduated from Northwestern University, committed to a career in acting. He made his Broadway debut in Tom Griffin's Einstein and the Polar Bear in 1981. Among his theatrical credits are The Dance Next Door, and The Trial of the Catonsville Nine at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and A Cry of Players at Baltimore's Center Stage. His feature film credits include Soldier Blue, The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, The Last Tycoon, The Secret of Nimh, Flight of the Black Angel and Nick of Time. Strauss' many television credits include Young Joe, The Forgotten Kennedy, Angel on My Shoulder, A Whale for the Killing, Heart of Steel, 83 Hours ‘Till Dawn, Fugitive Among Us, Men Don't Tell, Thicker Than Blood, The Yearling, My Father's Shadow: The Sam Sheppard Story, A Father's Choice, the mini-series Tender is the Night, Kane and Abel, Brotherhood of the Rose, Trial: The Price of Passion, and Texas Justice. In addition, Strauss starred for one season in the CBS drama Moloney. His most recent mini-series appearances were Seasons of Love with Rachel Ward and Hume Cronyn and as La Hire in the four-hour, CBS mini-series, Joan of Arc. This past season he was an executive producer of Showtime's remake of On the Beach, and starred as Sam Ratchet in the CBS production of Murder on the Orient Express. Strauss is married to actress Rachel Ticotin and lives with his two teenaged sons, Justin and Tristan, and stepdaughter, Greta, in Ojai, California. There, he also operates a commercial citrus enterprise that produces 400 tons of citrus per year. He is an avid gardener specializing in cacti and Mediterranean plants and his gardens have been featured on television and in several periodicals including The LA Times Magazine and Martha Stewart Living. Strauss was also recently appointed to the advisory board of the LA Arboretum. His previous residence in Agoura, California, was donated to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and has been acquired by the National Park Service. It is now open to the public as Peter Strauss Ranch. He is a spokesman for the National Search Dog Foundation, serves on many community committees including the Ojai Youth Foundation, Ojai Music Festival, and Ojai Film Society, and teaches high school public speaking when time permits.
