  •  Pete Doherty Detailed Biography -
In Hexham, Northumberland, England, Pete was born as the son of Jacqueline (Michels), who was of paternal Jewish descent, and Peter John Doherty, who was of Irish descent. Since his father was an officer in the British Army, he grew up at a number of army garrisons, and also resided at various times at garrisons in Catterick, Belfast, Germany, Bedworth, Dorset and Larnaca, along with his mother, a nurse, and two sisters, Amy Jo and Emily. Doherty was the second of the 3 children. He has achieved 11 top GCSEs, five of which were A* grades, at Nicholas Chamberlaine Comprehensive School in Bedworth and four passes at A Level, two at grade A. At the age of sixteen , he had won a poetry competition and ventured on a Russian tour organized by the British Council.

After his A-levels, he moved to the flat of his grandmother in London. There he got a job filling graves in Willesden Cemetery, though most of his time he spent time reading and writing while sitting on gravestones.

He took admission to Queen Mary, part of the University of London, for studying English literature. However she has left the course after his first year.

After leaving university, he got shifted to a flat in London flat with friend and fellow musician Carl Barât. Barat had been a classmate of Doherty's older sister at Brunel University.

Doherty was jointly voted as '#1 in NME's Cool List of 2004,' along with fellow Libertine Carl Barât. The following year he was placed at '#6,' and on May 10, 2006 Pete was voted as '#2 'in their poll depicting 50 of rock's greatest heroes.

On February 28 2008, Doherty won the "Hero of the Year" award at the 2008 NME Shockwave Awards.

Doherty and Barât formed a band called The Libertines in the late 1990s.However it was not till the year 2002, with the release of their debut album titled Up the Bracket, that they gained widespread mainstream success.

The group achieved critical and commercial success thereby gaining a dedicated cult following. In particular Doherty received all the praises by fans and critics alike as one of the most promising songwriters to have emerged on the British music scene for some time. However, Doherty's increasing drug problems led to his alienation from the band. In the year 2003, he was imprisoned for committing a burglary at Barât's flat.

The two initially fell out over this incident, but made amendment at a time when Doherty was in prison. He was originally sentenced to six months of imprisonment , but his sentence was cut short to two months only by appealing to the judge .Upon his release, Doherty instantly reunited with Barât and the rest of the band and thus played a gig in the Tap 'n' Tin pub in Chatham, Kent.

Following his rejoining of the band, Doherty sought treatment for his drug addiction. He attended the alternative detox centre Wat Tham Krabok. It is a temple in Thailand, that is famous for its rehabilitation program for crack and heroin users. There Pete was beaten with a bamboo cane and even forced to drink foul herbal concoctions to induce vomiting. He left the place after 3 days and returned to England. As a consequence of this, The Libertines canceled their trio that they were about to make at the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury festivals.

However, while post-production work was taking place on the second Libertines album (also called The Libertines) on June 2004, Doherty was again asked to leave the band. The band cited Doherty's continuing drug addiction as the reason for his dismissal, but at the same time depicted their willingness to take him back once he got rid of his addiction. Although Barât had previously stated that the Libertines were merely on hiatus, pending Doherty's recovery, the group effectively disbanded with Doherty's departure at the end of 2004. All members are now involved in other projects .

On April 12, 2007, Pete Doherty and Carl Barât played thirteen songs together at the second of Doherty's "An Evening with Pete Doherty" gigs at the Hackney Empire, London. The reunited Libertines played songs like "What a Waster", "Death on the Stairs", "The Good Old Days", "What Katie Did", "Dilly Boys", "France", "Don't Look Back into the Sun", "Tell the King","Dream a Little Dream of Me", "Time for Heroes", "Albion", "Seven Deadly Sins", and "The Delaney".

Prior to the disbanding of The Libertines, Doherty collaborated with local poet Wolfman. Jointly they recorded the single titled "For Lovers", which entered the top ten , charting at number 7, in April of the same year. Despite the success of the single, which was nominated for a prestigious Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, Doherty and Wolfman received only a handful of money Already they had to sell the publishing rights for a small sum in a pub. Later in the year 2004, Doherty provided guest vocals to the song called "Down to the Underground" by the British group client. The song was released in June 2004 as a B-side to the group's single titled "In It for the Money" that had its appearance on their second album City. In the year 2005 Doherty collaborated with the British rock band Littl'ans on the single "Their Way". In the year 2006, Doherty was featured on the charity single "Janie Jones", which was released for raising funds for Strummerville. Quite a number of artists and bands, such as Dirty Pretty Things, We Are Scientists, The Kooks and The Holloways, also featured on the track. In August 2006 it was announced that Doherty was recording with The Streets frontman Mike Skinner on a new version of "Prangin' Out", from Skinner's album The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living.

Towards the end of his time with Libertines , Pete Doherty laid the foundation of Babyshambles . Not only that The group has brought out 2 studio albums, namely, Down in Albion, in November 2005 and also Shotters Nation in October 2007. The band's touring schedule and releases have from time to time been disrupted by Doherty's ongoing legal problems. On August 2006, Babyshambles signed up with Parlophone , the major record label. They released The Blinding EP on 9 December 2006 and was highly acclaimed . On January 2007, they have signed a long term record deal with Parlophone. In November 2007 Babyshambles made their tour to the MEN Arena in Manchester, the Nottingham Arena, Bournemouth International Centre, London's Wembley Arena and Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.

Doherty has recently been rumoured to be working on new acoustic material. It was similar to the wealth of his unreleased songs that can be easily downloaded on the internet. On his own, and sometimes with his band, he has continued The Libertines' tradition of performing guerrilla gigs on short notice in small venues. On New Year's Eve 2005, Doherty held a guerrilla gig in his North London flat .There he showcased some of his solo works, many of which later got leaked onto the internet. On 31 March and 1 April 2006 Doherty played two surprising solo gigs. He also produced, a film with the title Spew It Out Your Soul at the suggestion of Bettina Aichbauer, friend of Doherty and owner of the NonStop Kino. This film was shown on screen during his performance. On June 2006, Pete Doherty made an announcement . He signed a contract with Orion Books for publishing his journals, in which he had recorded poetry, drawings, and photos . Most of Doherty's journals are freely available on the internet. The book, titled The Books Of Albion: The Collected Writings of Peter Doherty, was brought out on 21 June 2007.

Doherty had a colorful life on personal front. Following the footsteps of model and ex-fiancée called Kate Moss, Pete became the current face of fashion advertising campaign of Roberto Cavalli's Fall of 2007& 2008 . The photographs were highly praised. To top it all this '50s-style photographs have been brought into comparison with pictures of Marlon Brando.
