Pedro Mendes Detailed Biography -
|
Pedro Miguel da Silva Mendes (born February 26, 1979 in Guimarães, Portugal) is a Portuguese midfielder who played, in Portugal, for Vitória Guimarães and FC Porto, and, in England, now plays for Portsmouth, whom he joined from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2006.
He was first noticed as a Vitória Guimarães player, having his first game for Portugal National Team, in 20 November 2002, in a 2-0 win over Scotland, in a friendly match. He moved to FC Porto the following season, winning the Champions League, and becoming a regular player for the National Team. He was a member of the squad that was present at the Euro 2004 finals, playing, as a substitute to Miguel, at the final, lost to Greece (0-1). He was also a decisive player for Portugal during the World Cup 2006 finals qualificacion.
After moving to Tottenham Hotspur, is most famous goal was not given at Old Trafford against Manchester United. He had a lob shot fumbled by Roy Carroll into the goal, who then scooped the ball out, only for it to be disallowed because the referee did not believe the ball had crossed the line (television footage later showed that the ball had passed the goalline by almost a yard).
The 2005 - 2006 season saw Tottenham coach Martin Jol apparently disregard Mendes, and he has questioned whether he will stay at Tottenham. He moved recently to Portsmouth.
