Born in Chicago, Koules is divorced with one son, and lives in Los Angeles. He played minor hockey in the Chicago area, and played professionally. After his hockey career, he became a commodities trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He then moved into the entertainment industry in production.
He played on three different Western Hockey League teams Medicine Hat Flyers, the Brandon Wheat Kings. His best year was 1980; he scored 28 goals for the Spokane Tigers. In '82, Koules played for the Hampton Roads Va. Gulls (six goals). On the same roster was 24-year-old John Tortorella -- the same Tortorella who is the former Lightning head coach.
Koules helped found Peak Productions in the mid-1990s. After two hit movies, he became a Vice-President of Production with Paramount Pictures. In 1998, he helped found the Evolution Entertainment movie production company with Mark Burg. In 2004, the partnership formed Twisted Pictures to produce movies.
