Monaghan grew up in the small town of Winthrop, near Cedar Rapids in northeast Iowa.
She studied journalism at Chicago's Columbia College.

Monaghan was born in Winthrop, Iowa, USA on March 23, 1976. Her father Sharon Monaghan ran a day care center in the family's home and her mother Bob Monaghan is a factory worker and part time farmer. She has two older brothers, named Bob and John and her family frequently fostered and adopted children.
She graduated from East Buchanan High School on 1994, where she was the class president and acted in a few plays. After graduation, she moved to Chicago to study journalism at Columbia College Chicago. During her study, she did some modeling in the United States and in Milan, Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong. She left college with one semester remaining to move to New York to pursue modeling and acting full-time.
Monaghan was interested in acting and eventually received minor parts in episodes of television series such as Young Americans and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, both in 2001.
She made her big screen debut in the year 2001 in the small role of Henrietta in the movie 'Perfume'. This was followed by another small role in 'Unfaithful' in 2002. Meanwhile, she continued her modelling career.
In 2007, she starred in the remake of 'The Heartbreak Kid' with Ben Stiller as Miranda, the role originated by Cybill Shepherd. She also starred in 'Gone Baby Gone' as the main female protagonist Angie Gennaro opposite Casey Affleck. The film was directed by Ben Affleck. In 2008, she appeared as Hannah alongside Patrick Dempsey in 'Made of Honor'. She is currently filming 'Eagle Eye' in which she will star opposite Shia LaBeouf as a single mother framed as a terrorist.
