After his appearance in "My Fair Lady" in London (April 2001), the Evening Standard claimed he was "known throughout the western world as the most beautiful man ever seen".
Mark Umbers Detailed Biography -
Born and bred in Yorkshire, England, he went on to study Latin, Greek and Philosophy at Oxford University where he appeared in many student Shakespeare productions. His ensuing debut on the professional stage was greeted auspiciously by national newspapers. Continuing his career on the London stage in a versatile mix of classical and musical drama, he worked extensively for uber-director Trevor Nunn at the National Theater in several acclaimed productions, including the ground-breaking "The Merchant of Venice" (later filmed for TV) and perhaps most famously "My Fair Lady", for which he garnered rave reviews as Freddy Eynsford-Hill. After the hit show transferred to the West End (breaking advance box office records) he returned to classical theater, playing Tom Veryan in a sell-out production of "The Vortex" at the Donmar Warehouse. Spotted by casting agent John Hubbard, he auditioned for Mike Barker's period drama "A Good Woman" and was offered the American role of Robert Windermere, starring alongside Helen Hunt and Scarlett Johansson. This was followed with what the Daily Telegraph praised as "a wonderfully convincing performance" as Perkin Warbeck, the central role in Channel 4's critically lauded historical drama "Princes in the Tower".
