Ken Jennings Detailed Biography -
|
Ken Jennings, a software engineer from Utah, holds the record for the most money won and the longest winning streak on the popular game show Jeopardy! Born on May 23, 1974 in Edmonds, Washington, Jennings grew up in Seoul, South Korea and in Singapore. He graduated from Brigham Young University, where he majored in Computer Science and English, and holds an International Baccalaureate degree from the Seoul Foreign School. Jennings, who watched Jeopardy! on Armed Forces Television while growing up, writes questions for a quizbowl organization.
Ken Jennings became a pop culture icon in the United States for a period of six months in 2004, when he dominated the nightly game show Jeopardy!. His 74-show winning streak began on June 2nd, and ended on November 30, 2004 (although the show in which he lost had been taped on September 7th and details of it had quickly leaked out). When his reign as all-time Jeopardy! champ finally came to an end, Jennings had won a total of $2,520,700, making him the biggest winner ever in television game show history. His average daily haul was $34,063.51, he shattered the previous daily record of $52,000 by winning $75,000 in his 38th game, and he gave a total of over 2,700 correct responses.
Jennings' Achilles' heel was the fact that he does his own taxes. The question that finally tripped him up: "Most of this firm's 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only four months a year." The correct response: "What is H&R Block?" Jennings guessed Federal Express; his opponent, Nancy Zerg, answered correctly and won the Final Jeopardy round.
Jennings, a Mormon, has pledged to tithe ten percent of his winnings to his church. At the time of his win, he was planning a vacation in Europe, already had a book deal, and was open to commercial sponsorship opportunities.
H&R Block has offered Ken Jennings free tax preparation for life.
