Kelly Herndon Detailed Biography -
|
Kelly Herndon, in just his third year in the league, has developed into one of the best young cornerbacks on the roster and last year earned a starting spot at cornerback. He looks to continue that growth this year, and with the addition of Champ Bailey and John Lynch to the secondary, he is part of one of the best defensive backfields in the league. In his first season a starter, Herndon finished second on the team in tackles with 78 (65 solo) and added a career-high three interceptions for 19 yards and 14 passes defensed. Herndon joined the Broncos as a free agent in 2001 (10/24), and before making the active roster, spent a good portion of the 2001 season on the Broncos’ practice squad. He went through training camp with the Giants in 2001 (signed May 15, 2001), was waived Sept. 2, signed to the practice squad Sept. 4 and waived again Sept. 18. Herndon entered the NFL in 1999 with San Francisco, signing as an undrafted free agent April 23 but was waived Sept. 6. The 49ers re-signed Herndon July 7, 2000, then waived him Aug. 28.
• Herndon’s 20 pass breakups led the Broncos.
• He ranked fifth on the Broncos with 77 tackles (64 solo).
• Herndon caused fumbles in back-to-back games vs. Oak. (11/28) and at S.D.
(12/5).
• Herndon recorded the first sack of his career vs. Hou. (11/7) when he
drilled David Carr for a 5- yard loss on a blitz late in the third quarter.
2004: Herndon started opposite Champ Bailey in all 16 games and recorded 77 tackles (64 solo), two interceptions (17 yds.), one sack (-5 yds.), three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. His 20 pass breakups led the Broncos, and he notched two of the team’s 12 interceptions. In Denver’s regular-season finale vs. Ind. (1/2), Herndon stripped Dominic Rhodes deep in Colts territory and recovered the fumble to set up a Broncos field goal. He finished Denver’s win against Indianapolis with two tackles (both solo) and two pass breakups. After safety John Lynch tipped a fourth-quarter Billy Volek pass at Tenn. (12/25), Herndon intercepted the ball and returned it 15 yards to the Titans’ 19-yard line and set up a Broncos touchdown. He finished the Titans’ game with three tackles (2 solo) and two pass breakups in addition to his interception. Herndon recorded three tackles (2 solo) and a pass breakup at K.C. (12/19). He continued his stellar defense vs. Mia. (12/12), making four tackles (3 solo) and breaking up two passes, including A.J. Feeley’s final attempt of the game intended for Derrius Thompson. Herndon forced a fumble for the second consecutive game at S.D. (12/5) when he stripped the ball from Chargers wide receiver Eric Parker to force a turnover. Herndon finished the game with six tackles (all solo) while helping to limit Drew Brees to a season-low 106 passing yards. In an eight-tackle (6 solo) game vs. Oak. (11/28), he forced a fumble in the third quarter with a helmet-to-football collision on running back Justin Fargas and had a big hit on Tyrone Wheatley that forced the running back out of the game. He also broke up two Kerry Collins passes against Oakland. Herndon played well at N.O. (11/21), making five tackles (3 solo). In Denver’s game vs. Hou.
