Justin Gatlin Detailed Biography -
|
Growing up in Brooklyn, Gatlin used to jump fire hydrants on the sidewalk. When his friends couldn't keep up with him on foot, they would jump on bikes and race him. Gatlin's mother, Jeanette, owns a women's accessory store, and his father, Willie, is a counselor and teacher. Gatlin has two sisters, Terry and Nikki, and one brother, Bobby. When Gatlin was 8, his family moved to Pensacola, Fla. Gatlin attended Woodham High School in Pensacola, Fla., where he won state titles in the 100m, 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles, and finished third in the long jump.
As a freshman and sophomore at Tennessee, Gatlin became the first athlete since 1957 to win consecutive NCAA titles in both the 100m and 200m. After two years in Knoxville, Gatlin turned pro. He beat Greene in his first professional race the indoor 60m at the 2003 Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. Gatlin finished second to Terrence Trammell, while Greene was third. Gatlin also won the world indoor title in the 60m that year. He had a disappointing meet at 2003 Nationals, failing to advance past the first round of the 100m. Gatlin concluded his 2003 season by winning $500,000 one of the biggest cash prizes in track and field history in the 100m with a time of 10.05 at the Moscow Challenge.
In his two years at Tennessee, Gatlin led the Volunteers to the 2001 NCAA outdoor title and the 2002 NCAA indoor title. He won six sprint titles, four outdoor and two indoor and went undefeated in the 2002 outdoor season. Gatlin left Tennessee after two years to train with Trevor Graham in Raleigh, N.C. Graham likens Gatlin to two-time Olympic 100m champion Carl Lewis. Part of Gatlin's contract with Nike stipulated that the sneaker company pay for four years of tuition after he turned pro. Gatlin promised his mother he would get a degree, so he enrolled at St. Augustine College in Raleigh, started classes in January 2003, and plans to go back after the Games.
