John Mullen B.sc(Hons) MBCS CITP was born in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, the son of an Irish immigrant who worked as a Screeder. Cllr Mullen was educated at St Albert RC Salford High School; He later went to Worsley College, where he studied computing. From there he went on to the Bolton Institute (now Bolton University), graduating with a degree in computing. B.sc(Hons)
He worked as an IT manger for financial institutions for 17 years mainly in Manchester. He was admitted to the British Computer Society in 2000 (MBCS) and attained Chartered status in 2002 (CITP)
In 2004 he was elected as a councilor in the City of Salford, representing the Barton ward.
He was elected chairman of the Barton ward Labour Party in 2005.
In 2006 selected as the delegate for the Eccles CLP and made a speech calling for legislation and registration of ‘off road motor bikes’ at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester 2006 broadcast on national television. The subject of 'off road bikes' is currently now making its way to law in the English paliament.
In 2007 He was elected to the post of executive support for housing for the city of Salford. In this role he as as deputy for housing to Councillor Peter Connor.
Cllr Mullen works with local community groups and is a Roman Catholic, and has been married to Michelle Mullen since 1984, and they have two sons.
