|
|
John McCain is the senior United States Senator from Arizona and presumptive Republican Party nominee for the prestigious post of President of the United States in the forthcoming election of the year 2008 .
John McCain has an outstanding careergraph . Being graduated from the Naval Academy of United States in the year 1958 he became a naval aviator and used to fly attacking aircraft from carriers. During the Vietnam War, he narrowly escaped death in the 1967 Forrestal fire. Later in the same year during a bombing mission at North Vietnam, he was shot down, badly injured. He was captured as a prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese. He has spent 5 and half years as a prisoner of war. At that time he had experienced brutal torture.
After his retirement from the Navy in the year 1981, he got elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in the following year 1.e 1982. He has served two terms and then he was elected to the U.S. Senate in the year 1986, winning reelection in the following years viz. 1992, 1998, and 2004. Adhering to conservative principles, John McCain has established a reputation as a political maverick for disagreeing with his party on several key issues. Getting acquitted from the Keating Five scandal of the 1980s, he made campaign finance reform that is one of his signature concerns. Thus eventually he acted as a co-sponsor of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act in the year 2002.
McCain lost the Republican nomination in the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush after several hard-fought primary contests. In the year 2008 presidential election cycle, McCain staged a comeback after his campaign that got stumbled in the middle of 2007. In this way by the end of January 2008, he became the Republican front-runner. Following victories in early February of the year 2008, and the consecutive withdrawal of his closest competitors, John had enough delegates which helped him to become the presumptive nominee on March 4, 2008.
As has been already mentioned 2000 onwards proved to be crucial in the career of John McCain as a politician. In the year 2001 he broke up with the new George W. Bush administration on a number of matters. These include HMO reform, climate change, and gun legislation. McCain-Feingold was opposed by Bush as well. On May 2001, McCain was one of only two Senate Republicans who have voted against the Bush tax cuts.Later, when Republican Senator Jim Jeffords became an Independent, throwing control of the Senate to the Democrats, John McCain defended Jeffords against "self-appointed enforcers of party loyalty".Indeed, speculations were that McCain is possibly leaving the Republican Party. However McCain adamantly denied that he did not consider of taking such action.
After the September 11, 2001 attacks, McCain supported Bush and the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan on March 2002. McCain-Feingold was passed in both Houses of Congress and was signed as law by President Bush. It was McCain's greatest legislative achievement.
On May 2003, McCain voted against the second round of Bush tax cuts accusing it to be unwise at a time of war. By November 2003, after a trip to Iraq, John McCain was publicly questioning Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, saying that more U.S. troops were needed. In the following year, McCain announced that he had lost confidence in Rumsfeld.
On October 2003, McCain and Lieberman co-sponsored the Climate Stewardship Act that would have introduced a cap and trade system of greenhouse gases at the 2000 emissions level; the bill was defeated with 55 votes to 43 in the Senate. They reintroduced modified versions of the Act two additional times, most recently in January 2007 with the co-sponsorship of Barack Obama.
On 2004 U.S. presidential election, McCain was once again frequently mentioned for the vice-presidential slot, only this time as part of the Democratic ticket under nominee John Kerry. McCain said that Kerry had never formally offered him the position and that he would not have accepted it if he had. At the 2004 Republican National Convention, McCain supported Bush for re-election.Even he has praised George Bush's management of the War on Terror since the September 11 attacks. During that time the Senator defended Kerry's Vietnam war record.By August 2004, John McCain had the bes favorable-to-unfavorable rating (55 percent to 19 percent) of any national politician.
2004 also proves to be crucial for McCain's political career. He was getting geared up for re-election as Senator in that year . Thus He defeated little-known Democratic schoolteacher called Stuart Starky with his biggest margin of victory, gaining 77 percent of the vote.
McCain formally announced his desire of grabbing the presidency of the United States on April 25, 2007 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He emphasized that "America should never undertake a war unless we are prepared to do everything necessary to succeed.
