  •  Joe Biden Detailed Biography -

Joe Biden was born on November 20, 1942 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is the son of Joseph Robinette Biden, Sr. and Catherine Eugenia "Jean" Finnegan. His mother is an Irish woman. He is the first of four siblings. Joe has two brothers, James Brian Biden and Francis W. Biden, and a sister, Valerie (Biden) Owens.

Joe Biden is the senior United States Senator from Delaware. He is both the Democratic vice presidential nominee for the November 2008 election and a candidate for re-election in the U.S. Senate.

When Joe Biden was 10 years old, the Biden family moved to Claymont, Delaware because the Scranton area was in economic decline during the 1950s, and Biden's father could not find enough work there. Joe grew up in suburban New Castle County, Delaware.

Joe Biden attended the University of Delaware in Newark. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in history and political science in 1965 and ranked 506th of 688 in his class.

He attended Syracuse University College of Law in 1968 to receive his Juris Doctor and ranked 76th of 85 students. During his first year there, he was accused of having plagiarized 5 of 15 pages of a law review article. Biden said it was inadvertent due to his not knowing the proper rules of citation, and Biden was permitted to retake the course after receiving a grade of F, which was subsequently dropped from his record. Biden joined the Delaware Bar in 1969.

In 1981, Biden received an honorary degree from Saint Joseph's University. Since 1991, Biden has also served as an adjunct professor at the Widener University School of Law. There he teaches a seminar on constitutional law.

In February 1988, after suffering from neck pains, Biden was hospitalized and given lifesaving surgery to correct a brain aneurysm that had begun leaking. Another operation to repair a second aneurysm was performed in May 1988. The hospitalization and recovery kept him from his duties in the U.S. Senate for seven months.

When Biden joined office on January 3, 1973, at the age of 30, the minimum age to become a U.S. Senator, he became the fifth-youngest senator in U.S. history. Biden has since won five additional terms, usually with about 60 percent of the vote.

Joe Biden is also a long-time member and current chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

In an interview on NBC's Meet the Press on June 22, 2008, Biden confirmed that, although he was not actively seeking a spot on the ticket, he would accept the vice presidential nomination if offered. On August 22, 2008, Barack Obama announced that Biden would be his running mate.
