Heather Mills Detailed Biography -
|
|
Heather Mills was born in 1968 at Hampshire, England. Heather Mills is the daughter of John Mark Francis Mills, a former British soldier, and his wife Beatrice Mary Finlay. A few months after her birth, their family moved to the town of Washington in Tyne and Wear, then to Cockshott Farm in Rothbury.
At the age of eight, she was sexually assaulted by a swimming pool attendant, for her family affected deeply. John Mills’ relationship with Beatrice was characterised by violence and Heather’s mother eventually moved out when she was nine, leaving her and her brother Shane in the care of their father. At the age of 13, Mills ran away from home after she suffered abuse by him and he also became imprisoned for fraud.
When her father was in jail after being convicted of fraud, Heather Mills moved to London to live with her mother. Her mother was staying with her boyfriend Charles Stapley, who was an actor. At the age of 15, she ran away from home to join a funfair, and found herself living homeless under the arches at London Waterloo. Fortunately she managed to reconcile with Beatrice before she died of a blood clot in her lungs after minor surgery in 1989.
Heather Mills married Alfie Karmal in May 1989. Alfie Karmal encouraged her aspirations to be a model.
After suffering an ectopic pregnancy in 1990, she moved to Slovenia to recover. When she arrived there she witnessed the outbreak of civil war and it had such an impact on her that she spent the next couple of years helping to set up a refugee crisis centre, funded by her modelling. The Heather Mills Trust was also created to raise money for young disabled victims of the war.
In 1991 their marriage life ended with divorce.
Just after the civil war broke out, Heather Mills took a job as a ski instructor in Yugoslavia in 1992.
In August 1993, she was hit by a police motorcycle while crossing the road near Kensington Palace. In the accident her ribs were crushed, lung punctured and her left leg injured so badly that it was amputated below the knee. She was awarded £200,000 damages by the police.
After the accident, she sold her story to the News of the World, and gave other interviews, which she says earned her £180,000 and used it to set up the Heather Mills Health Trust to deliver prosthetic limbs to people, particularly children, who have undergone amputation after standing on landmines.
In April 1999, Heather Mills met Paul McCartney at the Pride of Britain charity event, where she was receiving an award for courage and appealing on behalf of the Heather Mills Trust. McCartney saw the appeal and donated £150,000 to her charity.
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills got married on 11 June 2002. In 2006, they announced their separation. In March 2008, their long divorce battle came into an end and Mills was awarded 24.3 million pounds in her divorce settlement.
