Born on January 13, 1982 in Rufino (Argentina), Guillermo Coria was taught to play tennis by his father Oscar shortly after he learned to walk. He turned Pro in 2000 and is a great, fresh player on the ATP tour ; his best surface is clay and he reached in 2003 the semifinals in Roland Garros. He also reached the quarterfinals in US Open, proving he's a very capable and versatile player, part of the "new generation" of tennis superstars. With Juan Carlos Ferrero struggling to overcome chicken pox prior to Roland Garros, Guillermo Coria established himself as the ‘King' of the clay-courts. The Argentine's preparations for the second major championship of the year, saw him win titles in Buenos Aires and Monte Carlo and final appearances at the Miami and Hamburg Masters. Leading two sets to love in the French Open final against compatriot Gaston Gaudio, Coria suffered cramps and never recovered in a bizarre five setter watched by former champion Guillermo Vilas. Remarkably, Coria reached the s'Hertogenbosch final two weeks later, but has been out of action since the Canada Masters at the end of July. He underwent shoulder surgery in August.
