Grégory Coupet, (born December 31, 1972 in Le Puy-en-Velay) is a football (soccer) player from France. He plays goalkeeper with Olympique Lyonnais and France national team.
After being for a long time the second goalkeeper in France, after Fabien Barthez, he alternates with Barthez in the France national team and has a good chance to be the regular goalkeeper during the coming Football World Cup 2006, due to his excellent performances with Olympique Lyonnais (four-time defending French Ligue 1 championship). After starting his career with AS Saint-Étienne (first game in Ligue 1 in march 1994) he made a risky move by playing to rival Olympique Lyonnais (two cities are only 80 km apart, and are long-time local and national rivals). His gamble payed off as AS Saint-Étienne is not anymore the main French team (it was in 60’s and 70’s) but since 2002 Olympique Lyonnais has dominated the French Ligue 1 championship and is also regularly present in the UEFA Champions League (Quarter-finals during UEFA Champions League 2004-05). "Greg" has 18 caps with the France team.
He made his debut in the national team in June, 2001 during the Confederation Cup. He was a member of the French team during the Football World Cup 2002 but did not play.
