 Gerard Depardieu Detailed Biography -
Gérard Depardieu is one of France's most prolific and best loved actors. His career boasts over 100 films since 1965. His credits are almost too numerous to mention, although many will remember him best in Green Card for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Comedy and My Father the Hero.

Perhaps the film which brought Depardieu international stardom was the 1990 production of Cyrano de Bergerac. His portrayal of Cyrano earned him an Academy Award® nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role, as well as the 1990 Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Male Performance, nine Césars including Best Actor and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.

Some of his many other film credits include: Le Dernier Metro for which he won a Cesar for Best Actor; Le Retour de Martin Guerre for which the American Critics Society voted him Best Actor; Danton, Police for which he won Best Male Performance at the 1985 Venice Film Festival and the classic, Jean de Florette.

Depardieu also starred in: Ridley Scott's 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, Randall Wallace's Man in the Iron Mask, Asterix and Obelix Take on Caesar, Sous le Soleil de Satan, Camille Claudel, Trop Belle Pour Toi, Tous Les Matins du Monde and Germinal.

In addition to an extensive film career, Depardieu is also an accomplished stage actor having starred most recently in last year's production of Les Portes du Ciel at the Theatre de Paris. He also starred in the 1974 and 1977 productions of Peter Hanke's La Chevauchee sur le Lac de Constance and "Les Gens Deraisonnables sont en voie de Disparition, as well as the 1983 production of Moliere's Tartuffe" and the 1986 production of Barbara's musical comedy Lily Passion. His most recent television credits include: Les Miserables, Berenice, Balzac and Monte Cristo.

In 1996 Depardieu was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur and the following year, the Venice Film Festival awarded him the Lion D'or. He was also awarded a Fellowship of the British Film Institute in 1989 and in 1992 was elected President of the 45th Cannes Film Festival.
