DeGraw was born on February 4, 1977. DeGraw grew up in South Fallsburg, New York, United States. His father was a prison guard, as mentioned in his song "I Don't Wanna Be".
DeGraw is a singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist. He tours to small venues throughout the United States. His J Records debut album, Chariot, includes eleven songs.
DeGraw's profile erupted after his song "I Don't Wanna Be" was featured as theme song for the teen soap opera One Tree Hill, which airs on The WB on Wednesdays at 8/7c. Another of DeGraw's songs, "Follow Through," has also achieved popularity and radio play. His song "We Belong Together" has been featured in the 2006 movie Tristan and Isolde, starring James Franco and Sophia Myles. DeGraw recently released an acoustic version of Chariot called Chariot Stripped. DeGraw and his band recorded the album live, in the studio, in only one take on the vocals, seeking an intimate effect.
Originally, DeGraw started in Manhattan clubs drawing his hometown fans to small clubs. Over 2004, his profile has grown bringing him to other states as he tours the country. He has appeared on television shows such as The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, The Late Show With David Letterman, The Ellen DeGeneres Show , and Live with Regis and Kelly. Recently, he has been seen in cameos on Dead Like Me on Showtime, What I Like About You on the WB, and American Dreams.
His brother Joey DeGraw is also a recording artist who is receiving rave reviews, he has played guitar and sang with Gavin on many different occasions. Joey's cd, "Midnight Audio", is available on itunes as well as his website.
DeGraw has recently toured with such acts as The Barenaked Ladies , Butterfly Boucher, The Allman Brothers Band, Marc Broussard, and Maroon 5.
Some celebrity fans of DeGraw's music are Elton John, John Mayer, Zach Braff, Eric West, Mandy Moore, and Jesse McCartney.
