Gary Armstrong Powell (born 11 November 1969) is a drummer in the English band Dirty Pretty Things. He was formerly the drummer for The Libertines and Eddy Grant. He also played with the New York Dolls for their 2004 reunion shows.
He joined The Libertines in 2001 after being introduced to the frontmen Carl Barât and Pete Doherty by their then-manager Banny Poostchi. Powell's current band is also fronted by Barât.
Powell began drumming as a child while marching in an American-style drum corps called Sunrisers in his native Birmingham.
The Sunrisers from Birmingham used to compete under the banner of Dcuk (www.dcuk.org.uk). Gary is a well known name within the drum corps world in the uk and were british champions in 1998.
