Marshall is known for his obsession with basketball: his contract has often obligated studios to provide a basketball court on his film locations. Also known for the photo albums he makes on each of his movies, taking separate pictures of himself with every member of the huge cast and crew. Attended Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), where he has a building specializing in radio/television/film production named for him and his wife. Wrote for the Daily Northwestern sports beat while in college, advocating that NU drop out of the Big Ten athletic conference. Graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in New York [1952] Career started as a comedy writer. Brother of Penny Marshall. Son of Anthony W. Marshall. Is afraid of heights. Son of Anthony W. In 1984 Marshall had a movie hit as the writer of The Flamingo Kid. He went on to direct Nothing in Common, Overboard, Beaches, Pretty Woman, Frankie and Johnny, and Exit to Eden, among others. Marshall is also a fine comic actor who often plays wisecracking guys who tell it like it is, having appeared in the television series Murphy Brown and in such movies as Goldfinger (uncredited), Grand Theft Auto, Lost in America, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Runaway Bride, Orange County, and A League of Their Own, directed by his sister. His most recent acting gig was as the father of the title character in Chicken Little. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
