Dalai Lama Detailed Biography

He is the 14th and present Dalai Lama who is a practicing member of Tibetan Buddhism's Gelug School. This world famous Buddhist monk is a Nobel Peace laureate as well. He also acquired leadership of the Tibetan Government in Dharamsala of India.
Born into the family of Tibetan farmers , he studied the Amdo, a Tibetan dialect as his first language. On November 17, 1950, he ascended to the throne of the ruler of Tibet.In this way he became the most important political ruler just one month after the People's Republic of China invaded Tibet on October 7, 1950. In the year 1951,being pressurized from the People's Liberation Army of China, the Tibetan people signed the 17 Point Agreement which was sanctioned by the Dalai Lama only a couple of months later. As per the authentic source,in the year 1954, he went to Beijing with the prospect of initiating peace talks with Mao Zedong and other leaders of China's communist government. However the peace talk proved to be futile. In the year 1956, however, the Dalai Lama chaired the Preparatory Committee for the Tibet Autonomous Region (PCART).
With the failure of uprising and the crumble of the Tibetan resistance movement in the year 1959, the Dalai Lama went to India, and thus became actively involved in laying the foundation of 'the Central Tibetan Administration (the Tibetan Government in Exile)'. Dalai Lama also had taken the move of preserving the culture and education of their Tibetan homeland amongst myriads of refugees who came with him.
Noted for his pleasing personality Tenzin Gyatso has touched the hearts of millions for public speaking quality. In fact he is the first amongst the all the Dalai Lamas who has undertaken journey to the West. There, he spread Buddhism and tried to promote values and virtues viz concept of universal responsibleness, ethics of the secular world as well as religious concordance.
Dalai Lama has engaged himself in various activities. Being a Dzogchen practitioner he not only used to teach but also initiated a number of publications. He has also given public introductions in the Kalachakra also .
Acknowledging his teaching activities,Dalai Lama was named Presidential Distinguished Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, United States in February 2007. This is for the first time that the leader of the Tibetan exile community has been given appointment in any university .
With 'University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisconsin, United States,' also Dalai Lama maintains a good relation and also visits there frequently. He visited the university in the year 1981 and again in 1989. In May 1998, he addressed a large audience at the Kohl Center and received an honorary degree from the university. On May 2001, he met a group of neuroscientists who have carried on research on the effects of meditation on brain function, emotions and physical health. Recently, on May 2007, he gave an important lecture on maintaining happiness.
Dalai Lama has maintained good foreign relations initiating tours to almost forty six nations. His extensive touring has stated since 1967. He also engaged in dialogue with various religious personalities. For instance he met Pope Paul VI at the Vatican in the year 1973. He met Pope John Paul II several times. In the year 1990, he met in Dharamsala with a delegation of Jewish teachers for an extensive interfaith dialogue. He visited Israel almost 3 times and met the Chief Rabbi of Israel in the year 2006. In the year 2006, he had a private meeting with Pope Benedict XVI. Other persons whom he met include Pope John Paul II, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the late Dr. Robert Runcie, and other leaders of the Anglican Church in London, Gordon B. Hinckley, late President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), senior Eastern Orthodox Church, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, and Sikh officials.
