Bruce Spence (born September 17, 1945(1945-09-17)) is an Australian character actor. He is perhaps most famous as the Gyro Captain in Mad Max 2 (also known as "The Road Warrior") and Jedediah the pilot in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. He also performed the voice of Chum in Finding Nemo, the Mouth of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the Trainman in The Matrix Revolutions and Tion Medon in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.
He is rumoured to have been the first actor considered for the role of Scorpius, the lead villain of the television series Farscape. The role eventually went to Wayne Pygram. Further, he and fellow Australian actor Lachy Hulme were rumoured to be considered for the role of The Joker in the sequel to 2005's Batman Begins, before Heath Ledger was cast.
At 6 feet 7 inches (2.0 m) tall, Spence is one of the tallest actors to have played a leading role, in the film Stork. (Richard Kiel is the tallest.)
Spence was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He is acting as the paleontologist (Huxley) alongside fellow actor Felix Nobis, in the Australian performance of BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs: The Live Experience. In his role, Spence narrates the activities of life-sized mechanical dinosaurs operated by teams of puppeteers and drivers.
