He is a member of the Circle Repertory Theatre and the Lab Theatre Company, both based in New York City. His father is Italian and his mother is Cuban. He was born in Union City, New Jersey, but grew up in Coconut Creek, Florida. He never formally studied acting. Was married to Jenny Lumet, who is Sidney Lumet's daughter and Lena Horne's granddaughter. They have a son, Jacob Cannavale, born 1998.

Bobby Cannavale (born 3 May 1971 in Union City, New Jersey, USA) is an Emmy-winning American actor. Born to an Italian father and a Cuban mother, Cannavale began his acting career in the theater - with no official acting training - and gained early film roles in Night Falls on Manhattan (1997) and The Bone Collector (1999), Cannavale became well-known when he starred as Bobby Caffey for two seasons on Third Watch. Following this, in 2001, he starred with Alan Arkin in 100 Centre Street - which was written and directed by Sidney Lumet, his father-in-law. In 2002, he joined the cast of Ally McBeal for the last five episodes but the show was then cancelled. Following this, he starred with Yancey Arias and Sheryl Lee in the miniseries Kingpin. In 2004 and 2005, he had a recurring guest role in the sixth and seventh seasons of Will & Grace as Vince D'Angelo, the first long-term boyfriend for Will (Eric McCormack) portrayed on the show, a move that many fans saw as long overdue. Often portraying roles such as these, many people have perceived Bobby as homosexual, but he is in fact heterosexual. He has also appeared in the films The Guru (2002), Shall We Dance (2004) and Romance & Cigarettes (2005), and guest starred in Sex and the City, Oz, Law & Order - and its spin-off series Criminal Intent and SVU.
