 Bette Midler Detailed Biography -
American entertainer Bette Midler was born in Honolulu, HI, to the only Jewish family in the neighborhood. After dropping out of a drama class at the University of Hawaii, she took a tiny role in the 1966 film Hawaii, playing a seasick boat passenger. Training for a dancing career in New York, Midler made the casting rounds for several months before finally winning a chorus role, and then the featured part of Tzeitel, in the long-running Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof. In the early 70’s Bette signed with Atlantic records, producing her 1972 platinum debut, “The Divine Miss M.” which won a Grammy award and was produced by Barry Manilow. Five successful albums followed, establishing her as a successful recording artist before the 1979 film, “The Rose”, confirmed her acting talent, securing her an Oscar nomination and two Golden Globe awards, one for best actress and another for newcomer of the year. The film's soundtrack album earned her platinum status as well as another Grammy.

After starring in “Jinxed” that same year, she took a four-year hiatus from filmmaking, during which she recorded “Divine Madness” and “No Frills”. In 1984, Bette signed a deal with Disney Studios that produced a flood of hit comedy films, including “Down And Out In Beverly Hills”, “Ruthless People”, “Outrageous Fortune” and “Big Business”. She also created All-Girl Productions, along with business partner Bonnie Bruckheimer. The company's first film, 1988's “Beaches”, was a huge success, paving the way for future films “Stella”, “For The Boys” and “Hocus Pocus”, as well as the CBS production of “Gypsy”, which earned her yet another Golden Globe award. 1990 saw the release of the album “Some People's Lives”, which contained the worldwide hit and Grammy award-winning song "From A Distance". Other film hits have been “Get Shorty”, for which she won an American Comedy Award and hit comedy “The First Wives Club”. In 2003 she teamed up with old partner, Barry Manilow, to produce a tribute album to Rosemary Clooney, which has sold well. This year, her role as Bobbie Markowitz in “The Stepford Wives” received critical acclaim, despite the film’s overall poor reception at the Box Office.
