Bec Cartwright Detailed Biography -
|
Machiavellian styled pop gurus can spend an entire career searching for the precocious talent, stunning beauty and fierce professionalism of Bec Cartwright. When they can’t find it, they contrive it. But there is nothing artificial about Bec Cartwright, a girl from the suburbs with the world at her feet.
Born Rebecca June Cartwright in Blacktown Hospital on 23rd July, 1983, this blue eyed, olive skinned natural blonde looks like the Girl Next Door, but her professional resume is the envy of the entertainment industry. Singing and dancing since she was three years old, Bec starred in her first commercial - My Little Pony, for US TV - when she was just five years old. Bec subsequently went on to appear in more than 50 TV commercials, all the while continuing to model, do voice over work and accept extra and small roles in TV productions as diverse as Police Rescue, Heartbreak High, Water Rats and the Heath Ledger series, Roar.
Throughout this period, Bec developed her singing, dancing and drama skills at the Australian College of Entertainment and at the Masque National Institute for Performing Arts. Her dancing, in particular, was exceptional and in 1996 Bec represented Australia at the Dance Excellence competition in Los Angeles and was awarded first place in the Junior Women’s Solo event.
In 1998, aged 15, Bec put her singing and dancing ambitions on hold to accept the role of Haley Smith on the high rating Australian drama, Home & Away. Seen nightly by more than 1.4 million viewers, Bec was immediately embraced by the Australian public, and in early 1999 her popularity was rewarded with a nomination for Most Popular New Talent at the 1999 Logie Awards and a listing in WHO Weekly’s 21 Hottest Stars Under 21. In 2001, Bec was nominated for a Silver Logie for Most Popular Actor. A favourite teen magazine face, Bec has won a host of reader voted awards including Queen of TV by TV HITS magazine in 1999 and was one of the Top 10 Stars for the New Millennium in Girlfriend magazine's January 2000 issue. In 2002 Bec scored a trifecta in Big Hit magazine’s Readers Poll when she was voted the #6 Favourite Star in the Whole World, the #2 Best Female Star and the #5 Hottest Female Celebrity!
Despite her TV success, early 2002 saw Bec rekindle her love affair with singing and dancing. A deal with Warner Music was negotiated and in October of that year Bec released her debut single, the infectious pop anthem, All Seats Taken. The song climbed to No. 8 on the ARIA charts and was certified Gold. Incredibly – and in a salient nod to her loyal and ever expanding fan base - the song took residence in the charts for an amazing five months. In May 2003, Bec’s funked-up second single, On The Borderline, debuted in the Top 30.
Now it’s time for the album, appropriately titled, Bec Cartwright. “I was going to name it after one of the songs, It’s a Matter of Time”, recalls Bec, “because I felt this is my time. It’s time for me to get things done and prove I’ve got what it takes”. And if doing that meant 19 hour days juggling her acting and recording commitments, then so be it. “I went through lots of lollies to keep me going”, says Bec. “I recorded it at night after work, no matter what time it was, and on weekends. I used up every spare second I had for four weeks”.
Bec’s commitment to the album included everything from sifting through and selecting songs from some of the world’s leading pop songwriters to fine-tuning her vocals in the studio. In fact, Bec’s voice is a revelation – coquettish one moment, full throated pop diva the next. The album’s diverse musical style is anchored by the confident pop production of Tony Cvetkovski and Michael Szumowski, and swings from up-tempo pure pop (All Seats Taken and On The Borderline) to All Saints meets Spice Girls R&B (A Matter of Time, Need A Little Love), flirty Fever era Kylie (What’s Got Into You), riffing guitar pop (Drive By) to the off kilter Juliana Hatfield styled chorus of album closer, He’s Yours. A sophisticated, hook heavy pop romp that introduces Bec Cartwright as a savvy musical force with a white hot future, Bec Cartwright is out June 16. So look out there’s a new kid in town!
