Was a lance corporal in a United States Marine Corps scout/sniper platoon who saw combat in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during the Gulf War. Earned a Master of Fine Arts in writing from the University of Iowa. Was an English professor at St. Mary's College of California until he sold the film rights to "Jarhead."
